You've got an Android device, either because you didn't want, or couldn't afford, an iPhone - and in years past that meant you had to live with substandard apps. Thankfully, those days are well and truly over, with reams of great little programs standing toe to toe with the best Apple's App Store has to offer.

Admittedly, the huge quantity of apps doesn't mean they're all quality - far from it in fact. To make sure you never install a duff app here's our selection of the best you should install right now - each one carefully chosen to ensure you'll have a whole suite of fun, engaging and, dammit, useful apps on your phone or tablet.

Toontastic 3D gives you or your child all the tools you need to create your own cartoons. And we’re not talking some sort of flip-book style animation, but rather fully animated 3D characters in 3D environments, with dialogue and music.

After aiding Google with the fantastic Nexus 6P, Huawei has finally crafted a phone of its own worthy of all the hype the Chinese brand likes to heap on itself. The P9 , a follow-up to the already quite impressive P8, takes a bunch of high-end specs and crams them into a very thin and light metal shell.

Like all of Huawei's phones, the P9 is powered by a Kirin CPU and that's paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It's a fast device, that can handle all the high-end games we threw at it. It has a lovely screen too, even though it's not quad-HD. The 1080p panel is sharp and accurate with great viewing angles.

The biggest boon for Huawei though is getting Leica to bless its cameras. On the back there are two 12MP sensors, one is your regular RGB colour sensor and the other takes solely monochrome pictures. Using these cameras together is supposed to improve low-light performance and while we didn't find it to be quite as impressive as the Galaxy S7 or LG G5 it still takes decent low-light shots.

We spend dozens of hours each year testing the latest Android smartphones in everyday use, and we think the Google Pixel is the best Android phone for most people. It has the fastest performance of any Android phone we’ve tested, a best-in-class 12-megapixel camera, and impressive build quality. It also runs the latest version of Android, which has exclusive features like the voice-activated Google Assistant, and it’s guaranteed to get fast updates to the latest version of Android for two years.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is the best choice if you’re not on Verizon and prefer to buy your phone from your carrier, or you want a water-resistant phone or one with a microSD card slot. Its 5.1-inch 2560×1440 Super AMOLED screen is still the best and brightest on any phone, but it’s only marginally better than the Pixel. The 12-megapixel main camera takes fantastic shots that are almost as good as the Pixel’s and better than any other Android phone.

The S7’s metal-and-glass body makes it more attractive than most other Android phones, plus it has a microSD card slot and a long-lasting battery. Samsung’s software has improved, as well, but it still has some redundancy and bugs that make us yearn for the Pixel, and it’s a couple Android versions behind.

We’ve tested 20 of the best budget Android phones since 2015, carrying each one for multiple days of hands-on testing. Right now, our favorite is the Motorola Moto G4 , which offers the best combination of features and price. It performs better than most other budget Android devices, works on every major US carrier, and offers easy-to-use software. But everyone’s budget is different, so we also have picks for shoppers who can spend a little more as well as for those who need a decent smartphone for the price of a console video game.

For the fourth year in a row, the best cheap Android phone comes from the Moto G line. For just $200—that’s the full price, not a down payment or a subsidized price—the Moto G4 gives you a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 LCD screen, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage with a microSD card slot. It’s faster than most other budget phones thanks to its Snapdragon 617 processor, and the Android 6.0 software is clean and fast, with no bloatware. The Moto G4 has better software than phones more than three times its price.

The fourth-generation Moto G is also the first in Motorola’s budget line to be unlocked for all US carriers, even Verizon and Sprint. Plus, you can customize the Moto G with colorful back plates and accent colors. We recommend the $200 version with 16 GB of storage. You can upgrade to 32 GB for $30 more, or you can get a 64 GB microSD card for the same money.
